ELBA — Andalusia’s Rafeal Sims broke through a mass of Elba defenders late in the third quarter to score a 65-yard touchdown run Friday night to give the Bulldogs the needed momentum to win their jamboree game, 9-0.

It was Sims’ first and only carry of the game.

AHS coach Brian Seymore said the players were not “focused” during most of the game Friday night.

“We were outplayed a little bit,” Seymore said. “Offensively, we sputtered.”

Andalusia’s defense made a statement in the first quarter, forcing the Tigers to punt the ball away on fourth-and-8.

The recent rains and sloppy field conditions didn’t help either team for the rest of the first half as Andalusia had four turnovers and Elba two.

Late in the fourth quarter, Andalusia kicker Courson Hopkins added a 21-yard field goal to give his team an extra three points.

Seymore said the major key in the second half for the team was “execution.”

“That’s what we lacked in the first half,” he said. “We played a lot of young kids and we’ve still got a lot of work to do.

“I hope the community will come out next week to support us as we open against Straughn.”

Andalusia quarterback Kenneth Chambers was 1-for-2 with 19 yards. Chambers had nine carries for 19 yards. Senior running back Marcus Jones had five carries for 22 yards.

The Bulldogs played the jamboree without injured starting quarterback Adam Zelensky and starting linebacker Johnny Jones. Seymore has said both players are “day-to-day.”

Andalusia will host city rival Straughn next Fri., Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. in the regular season opener for both teams.
