Local karate student to compete in Spain tourney

William McTear, a student with Andalusia Isshinryu Karate, was selected to represent the USA Karate Team on Oct. 23-30 in a tournament in Spain.

Every year, the World Karate Association holds a world championship tournament, where all countries bring their best fighters to compete.

McTear will be competing in the 35-year-and-up division, and in the 150-to-165-pound weight class. He will be joined by other world champions, including Ricky Murry, Raymond Daniels and Ross Levine.

McTear also has a fight team that he trains for free on his free time. They have been competing in Georgia monthly.

Sat., Aug. 15, the team competed in Atlanta at the Ricky Murry STAR Fighting Challenge. Malik McTear took first place in fighting, Jalem Washington was third in fighting and Quake Gantt did not attend. Sat., Aug. 22, the team competed at a tournament in Panama City, Fla. Malik McTear took first place in fighting, Gantt was first in fighting and Washington took third in fighting.
