There was “quite a bit of traffic” on Covington County roadways during the Labor Day holiday weekend, Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Wednesday.

Deputies worked 47 hours of overtime participating in the statewide “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” traffic initiative, logging nearly 140 “contacts” including two driving while intoxicated arrests and four drug arrests.

“There was quite a bit of traffic on the road, going both northbound and southbound,” Meeks said. “The majority of motorists seemed to be traveling at reasonable speeds, and surprisingly, we only issued seven seat belt violations, which is a low amount for a holiday weekend.”

Other citations included 58 speeding tickets and 32 warnings, he said.

An Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs grant, administered by the Southeast Alabama Regional Highway Safety Division at Enterprise-Ozark Community College, provided funding for the initiative.
