An Elba woman was arrested Wednesday and accused of stealing a physician’s prescription pad to obtain illegal prescriptions.

Drug Task Force agent David Harrell said Joeaqulyn B. Ellison, 38, allegedly stole a prescription pad from an Elba physician and called in two prescriptions — one for the sleeping pill Ambien and another for the nerve pill Xanax — to a Covington County pharmacy.

“The supplies for were for 30 days and 90 days, respectively,” Harrell said. “The first incident happened last month when Ms. Ellison turned a fake prescription. It was filled, but when she called for a refill, it was determined the prescription was illegal. It was a fake.”

Ellison was arrested, charged with possession of a controlled substance and third-degree possession of a forged instrument and booked into the county jail under a $13,000 bond.

The investigation into Ellison’s alleged activities continues, and Harrell said additional charges may be forthcoming.

“People’s addictions usually catch up with them before it’s over with,” he said. “With the constant help with physicians and pharmacies, we are now able to more effectively pursue investigations to control — and inevitably stop — the abuse of these narcotics.”
