“To Tell the Truth,” sometimes the “Wheel of Fortune” deals out the cancer card; however, one local group is working hard to raise money so future generations won’t have to say, “Let’s Make a Deal,” when faced with the dreaded disease.

Covington County Relay for Life announced Monday it will hold its first organizational team captain meeting 6 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Covington County Board of Education building. The 2010 Relay event is set for Fri., May 7, at the Kiwanis Building. This year’s goal is $117,000.

“Our theme this year is a game show theme called ‘In it to Win it for a Cure,’” said Relay chair Ressie Gray. “Our committee has grown this year, and as chairman, I‘m so excited. We have eight teams that have already signed up, and I think that is wonderful.

“I know that times are tough, but as long as we come together as a community, honor our survivors, and help others, that is what it is all about,” said Gray, who has had several family members that have battled against cancer and one who lost the battle.

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fund-raising activity. During the Relay, team members take turns walking around a track. Last year’s event raised nearly $100,000 and featured more than 320 registered participants.
