When Red Level travels to Mobile this Friday evening to continue region play, coaches said applying pressure to Mobile Christian quarterback Jonathan Redd would be the “key” of the game.

Redd helped lead Mobile Christian to its first victory of the season by throwing three touchdown passes and running for a touchdown in a 32-0 win over Flomaton last week.

In its first region game of the season, Red Level (2-4, 0-4 in Class 2A, Region 1) lost to Flomaton, 38-6.

“(Mobile Christian) put it on Flomaton, the team that put it on us,” Red Level coach Tony Ingram said. “They’re getting better every week. Their quarterback is outstanding. If he gets the time he gets that I saw on film, then we’ve got our hands full.”

Last week, Red Level lost to Washington County, 17-6, at home.

Ingram said while Redd is a good passer at quarterback, he can also run the ball.

“He’s a very good runner,” Ingram said. “You’ve got to pick your poison with him. He’s one of those intelligent quarterbacks and he goes to the Manning Academies. He’s very well coached.”

Ingram said Mobile Christian (1-5, 1-3) is a “passing team” and the key on offense for his team is to “sustain drives.”

“We’ve got to sustain drives. If we don’t score, then we’ve got to keep them pinned down,” he said. “That’s probably what was our downfall last Friday night.

“We know we’re not going to score 50-60 points,” he said. “But, we’ve got to put drives together and run the clock. If we have to punt the ball, then we have to make them go 80 yards, instead of these short 40-50 yard drives.”

Ingram said he is not relying on a few players to make plays for his team Friday night — he said it’s going to be a “total team effort.”

“I think our players saw last Friday night that they can step it up,” he said. “We’re going to be depending on everybody.”

Ingram added that a win Friday night would benefit his team for the rest of region play.

“A win would be a tremendous boost,” Ingram said. “I think it’d help these kids a lot. It would mean we would be going into Leroy next week with a win. We’ve seen that Leroy is mortal. It’ll give us a boost going into the last half of the season in trying to get this thing back on track.”
