I have talked with a lot of people and asked them their opinion about Andalusia’s “Halloween on the Square.” Early everyone I have talked to has said they still enjoy the old-fashioned door-to-door trick-or-treating.

Last year, we took my grandson up to the square and there were so many people you could hardly walk. The line he had to stand in for candy was very long; what 5-year-old is going to like that? It was more of a hassle than it was fun. We left and went to look for some houses that were giving out candy.

Thankfully, we found some and he really enjoyed trick-or-treating. I realize why the city started “Halloween on the Square,” but to me, it seems like it is more for the teenagers and the adults, than for the kids. Don’t you remember when you were growing up, and the excitement of getting to go trick-or-treating? I do, and I want my grandson to enjoy that fun, just as his mother and daddy and myself did as we were growing up.

I would like to suggest doing Halloween on the Square one night, and trick-or-treating on the other. If that’s not possible, then I want to encourage people to turn their lights on and give out candy to those kids who want to go door to door. I would like to think most parents have enough common sense to check their children’s candy.
