Eagles out of playoff chase

The battle for a possible Class 1A, Region 2 playoff spot between Pleasant Home and Providence Christian came down to two big plays.

Providence Christian used a blocked punt and a long fourth-down touchdown pass to rally from a 13-point deficit to defeat Pleasant Home, 14-13, Friday night at Eagle Field.

The win assures Providence Christian a playoff spot and moves their record to 4-2 in region play.

Pleasant Home dominated the first half by racing out to a 13-0 lead behind two interception receptions from Ethan King.

On the first play from scrimmage, King picked off Providence Christian quarterback Alex Plagenhoef’s pass at the 31-yard line.

Pleasant Home marched down the field behind the blocking of John Caleb Sanders and Dale Payne to score with 7:31 left in the first quarter. The 69-yard drive was highlighted by a key fourth down pass from King to Cory Sims that kept the drive alive at the Providence Christian 25-yard line.

Four plays later, Tyler Barbaree scored off left tackle to give Pleasant Home a 6-0 lead. C.J. Langley kicked the extra point and the Eagles lead 7-0.

Pleasant Home’s defense shut down the powerful Providence Christian offense, allowing only two first downs in the first half.

When Providence Christian tried to pass, Ethan King swiped another interception and took it 49 yards to the end zone, making the score 13-0 at half time.

Providence Christian’s defense came out to play in the second half, forcing a fumble by Langley at the end of the third quarter.

The Pleasant Home defense held, but on a fourth-and-15 play, Austin Evans hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Plagenhoef to score Providence Christian’s first touchdown. Banks Smith kicked the extra point to cut Pleasant Home’s lead to 13-7 with 10:40 left in the game.

The defensive battle continued until Providence Christian blocked Joshua Godwin’s punt with 5:23 left in the game. Providence Christian drove to the Pleasant Home 2-yard line where Austin Gilchrist scored on a run off left tackle. Banks Smith’s extra point with 3:37 left made it 14-13 Providence.

Pleasant Home’s offense was led by Tyler Barbaree who ran 29 times for 94 yards and one touchdown. Ethan King was 7-for-16 for 57 yards passing. Providence Christian ran for 94 yards and threw for 47 yards and one touchdown.

Pleasant Home returns to action next Friday night when it hosts Florala at 7 p.m.
