DAPHNE — Straughn defeated Dale County 3-0 in the consolation match to finish third at the Class 3A south regional tournament at Bayside Academy in Daphne on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers picked up their first win of the day, defeating Headland in three games, 25-10, 25-10, 25-4.

In the second match of the day, Cottage Hill defeated Straughn 12-25, 21-25, 11-25.

Straughn coach Lori Kinsaul said it was an up and down day for her team.

“It really was a roller coaster type day,” Kinsaul said. “Our goal was third or better and we got third.”

Straughn will travel to play at Trinity Presbyterian in Montgomery on Thursday at 4 p.m. The winner of that sub-state match will advance to the Elite Eight in Pelham on Oct. 28-29.

Straughn 3, Headland 0

Straughn’s Kayla Messer had six kills, 14 service points and three aces; Kaitlynn Wiggins had five kills; and Holley McGlaun had 10 assists.

Cottage Hill 3, Straughn 0

Kayla Messer had seven digs, two kills and six service points; and Brooke Harris had four kills in the match.

Kinsaul said one reason the Cottage Hill game was so tough was because of the “speed” of play.

“Cottage Hill was tough,” she said. “You get in those grooves where the games you play are slower and then you get in to one that’s really fast. It’s just hard to pick up the pace and practice that, too. In Cottage Hill, our serve-receive was the big key to their win. We’ve got to work on that this week to get ready for sub-state.”

Straughn 3, Dale County 0

Kayla Messer had 10 digs, 11 service points and eight kills; Kaitlynn Wiggins and Brooke Harris both had six kills apiece; and Lakin Thornton had eight assists.

“It took them a while to get back in the groove off that loss to Cottage Hill,” Kinsaul said on the play at the beginning of the consolation match. “After the second game, they started coming out of it and they did fine.”

In other area action, Pleasant Home ended its season losing to Sweet Water, 3-1.
