Today, the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs will travel to play Jemison in the Class 4A sub-state tournament.

Andalusia coach Angie Grimes said the team has been working on attacking the net.

“We’re working on our block coverage, tips for the middle and our broken plays,” Grimes said. “I mean, if we run an offense and the ball comes over, we have to have quick feet. I’ve been stressing to the girls to hustle more on defense.”

Last weekend, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Montgomery Catholic 3-1 at UMS-Wright in the consolation round, finishing third at the south regional tournament in Mobile.

The Lady Bulldogs started the day by sweeping Livingston 25-18, 25-10, 25-11, before falling to Class 4A foe St. James in their second match of the day.

Andalusia lost to the Lady Saints, 12-25, 21-25, 16-25, but bounced back to win against Montgomery Catholic, 12-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-21, in the consolation match.

Grimes said this year at sub-state would be new to her team.

“The last time we were in sub-state was in 2007 (when we hosted),” she said. “For us this is a new fresh way to go to sub-state, because we finished third at the regional tournament.

“I think the girls are ready and are looking forward to going to sub-state,” she said. “I’m proud of the girls because we’ve made it this far.”

Grimes said another focus at practice this week was “transition.”

“We’re going to continue to work on our defense and transition,” she said. “We have some powerful hitters and they’re not used to the ball coming back over the net and we’ve got to be prepared for that. We have worked on it, but apparently, it’s not good enough.”

Match time in Jemison is at 4 p.m.
