Straughn’s Lady Tigers got their holiday season off to a good start.

Straughn defeated Elba, 59-35, Wednesday night to win the third annual Straughn Thanksgiving tournament.

“That was a great way to start the holidays and the season,” Straughn coach Scott Kinsaul said of the championship win. “We expect a lot out of this team. Hopefully, this will springboard us into the rest of the year.”

Straughn’s Kimberly Teel led with 15 points to help lead her team to the win. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Straughn (3-0) executed well on defense to hold Elba to 15 points in the first half. In the second half, Elba only managed to score 20.

Kinsaul said he was happy with the level of execution his girls displayed Wednesday night.

“For the first of the year, I thought we executed our presses and our man-to-man offenses really well,” he said. “We got a lot of great shots, open looks and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Katy Messick also had a good night in scoring with 12 points and Holley McGlaun added 11.

Elba’s Kei-Auna Edwards led her team with 12 points.

Next Tuesday, Straughn will travel to play Pleasant Home to start its regular season.

“They’ll be ready for us down there,” Kinsaul said. “Coach (Kelley) Garner will have them ready I know and I told the girls that we better be ready to play Tuesday night.”

The third annual Straughn Lady Tigers Thanksgiving tournament all-tournament team includes, Opp’s Soyia Folmar; Flomaton’s Tara Gafford and Brittany Mallet; Elba’s Kei-Auna Edwards, Reality Singletary and Jacquetta Daniels; and Straughn’s Katy Messick, Tiffany Freeney, Tiffany Taylor, Kimberly and Kayla Teel.

Straughn 43, Flomaton 35

Straughn’s Kimberly Teel led with 13 points to help lead her team to an eight-point win over Flomaton Tuesday night.

Kayla Teel had eight points, Tiffany Taylor had seven points, Katy Messick had six points and Tiffany Freeney added five.

Flomaton’s Tara Gafford led with 12 points and Brittany Mallet added 10.
