A weekend accident involving a Florala man has left a man from DeFuniak Springs, Fla., apparently paralyzed from the waist down.

According to reports, the accident occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. Saturday just over the Alabama-Florida line on Stokes Road in Laurel Hill, Fla., when a 1996 Nissan truck left the dirt shoulder of the road and overturned.

Authorities said neither of the two vehicle’s occupants — James Franklin, 35, of Florala and Jimmy W. Pickron, 44, of DeFuniak Springs, Fla. — could remember who was at the wheel at the time of the accident.

When rescue workers arrived, they found the truck on its roof in the middle of the road and Pickron partially ejected from the vehicle. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt and alcohol was involved in the accident.

Pickron suffered serious injuries and was paralyzed from the waist down when life lighted from the scene to Pensacola’s Sacred Heart Hospital.

Franklin was not injured in the accident.

As of Monday afternoon, Pickron was listed in critical condition at Sacred Heart Hospital.
