“Meet me under the mistletoe” was the theme of this year’s Sub-Deb’s holiday dance, held Sat., Dec. 5, at the Andalusia Country Club.
Following a tradition begun with the Christmas Dance of 2004, Sub-Deb spotlighted senior members Tally Morrow and Kaitlin Holley, who wore white evening gowns and carried bouquets of red roses.
Chad Hughes emceed the event, and eighth grade girls who are club members assisted at the dance as servers.
Established in the 1950s by Andalusia Country Club members who had high school-age daughters, Sub-Deb was designed to provide social experiences from which young women could learn. Holiday dances have been a tradition from the very onset of this group, according to the Sub-Deb handbook. The group was called Sub-Deb because the high school girls participating were just under the ages of traditional debutantes. Webster’s Dictionary defines “debutante” as “a beginner in society.”
Sub-Deb meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month, August through May. Each meeting has a program and a business portion.
The first meeting is the ‘Mother-Daughter Information Tea’ when club rules and calendar are discussed. Programs this year have included a fashion show by Rhonda Hattaway of Elegant Apparel; Cynthia Taylor, CRNP, who spoke on making healthy choices now for the future; and etiquette by Jeaniece Kirkland.
The second dance of the year is held in the spring with a theme chosen by Sub-Deb members.
