The Andalusia Bulldogs earned a pre-holiday victory last Friday night over Trinity Presbyterian, winning 74-53 at home.

Trinity led 7-2 early in the first quarter, but Andalusia scored 15 points to lead 17-11 leading into the second.

“We had to go to an alternate plan,” Andalusia coach Richard Robertson said about the first quarter. “After we caught them, we were leading them at every stop. They are the kind of team that you’ve got to keep them at bay.

“You can’t let them hang around,” he said. “If you do that, then they’ll beat you. They’ll beat you at the end.”

At halftime, Andalusia led 34-26, and in the third quarter they added 15 points compared to Trinity’s 14.

The Bulldogs (12-1) outscored Trinity 26-13 in the fourth quarter to take the win.

“We had to do some things that we were planning on doing,” Robertson said about Trinity’s game plan. “That’s what we needed. They had a good plan for what we’ve been doing.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to get my guys to see,” he said. “I plan these things that way. If we can get away with doing things we’ve been doing, then I will. If we don’t, then we’ve got other plans.”

Robertson said his team scored 26 points in the fourth quarter by taking advantage of Trinity’s turnovers.

“We changed defenses,” he said. “We lined up in the trap and got some steals. We were man-to-man in the first of the game. Then, we went to the trap, we caught them off-guard and got some steals. They shot some threes and we ran on them.”

Andalusia’s Quayshaun Denson led with 15 points, Jamal Curry had 11 and Jacard Townsend added 10.

Trinity’s Blake Struthern led with 17 points and Ed Willcoxon had 15.

The Bulldogs were 10-of-18 from the free throw line.

Andalusia will travel to play in the Dothan Eagle/Dothan Progress Holiday Prep Classic, starting Saturday at the Ozark Civic Center.

Its first game against Barbour County is at 2 p.m.

Robertson said the season has only just begun.

“The basketball season has just started for us,” he said.

Coach Mack Brown reconvened his team last week and has been putting them through practices that emphasize fundamentals and physical play.

He’s lining up the first-team offense against the first-team defense and letting them pound on each other.

to keep them as sharp as possible during the monthlong stretch between their victory in the Big 12 title game and the BCS title game at the Rose Bowl on Jan. 7. They will start focusing on the Crimson Tide after a break for Christmas.

He’s done it this way for several years, and for good reason. Texas has won five straight bowl games.
