Straughn’s Kimberly Teel led with 18 points Tuesday night to help her team rout Red Level, 64-29.

Two other Straughn players also finished in double digits. Tiffany Freeney had 12 and Holley McGlaun had 11.

“We shot the ball real well,” Straughn coach Scott Kinsaul said. “We made nine 3-pointers tonight. If we can make threes like that, then we’ll be a tough team to beat.”

Kinsaul said that shooting the ball well is something he’s been waiting to see from his team.

“That’s what I’ve been looking for — consistency in our shooting,” he said. “We played well and we’re looking forward to next week (at the Red Level tournament).”

Straughn (9-1) outscored Red Level 21-7 in the first quarter and 7-2 in the second.

On the defensive front, Straughn only allowed 12 points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth.

“We worked on the 2-1-2 zone tonight,” Kinsaul said about his defensive play. “We didn’t play very much man-to-man in case we needed it for the tournament.”

In the third quarter, Straughn scored 22 points and added 14 in the fourth.

Koneshia Calloway led with 10 points and Adrianna Stewart had seven for Red Level.

Red Level coach Delores Douglas said there were some “bright” spots on the court Tuesday night.

“We just can’t get it together sometimes,” she said. “You see some spots that are bright. We boxed out a lot better rebounding wise. We just rush ourselves offensively and have a lot of turnovers that just killed us.

“We need to slow it down and make better passes,” she said. “We need to pull a full game together. These bits and spurts are not going to cut it.”

Straughn will play its next game at the 12th annual Red Level Invitational Christmas next Monday at noon against Loveless Academy Magnet Program.

Red Level will start at 6 p.m. against Highland Home.
