Despite defeating Hillcrest-Evergreen, 67-64, and earning a second area win Tuesday night, Andalusia coach Richard Robertson said his team still has a long way to go.

“Two-and-oh in area means nothing,” he said. “We’ve got four still to go.”

The No. 3-ranked Bulldogs trailed 4- early in the first quarter, but a quick six-point rally gave them a one-point edge at 7-6.

Later in the first, the Bulldogs (14-2, 2-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) managed a 5-0 run over Hillcrest. Hillcrest quickly scored four points on rebounds to decrease Andalusia’s lead by three points at 16-13.

In the second quarter, Andalusia rebounded well and executed good ball control. The Bulldogs outscored the Jaguars 20-14 as a result to lead 36-27 at the break.

Hillcrest went on an early 8-5 run in the third quarter. But by the third quarter’s end, Andalusia led 50-41.

The contest came down to the wire during the final eight minutes.

Andalusia quickly shot out to a 60-48 lead over Hillcrest, but the visiting Jaguars weren’t done, yet.

With the score at 62-55, the Jaguars took advantage of turnovers to sink two jumpers with 2:01 on the clock. Hillcrest later hit a 3-pointer to cause some worry on the Bulldogs’ bench.

Andalusia’s Derrick King was fouled and made his two free throws after Hillcrest’s short rally to bring his team’s lead to 64-60.

A quick jumper by Hillcrest gave Andalusia a two-point 64-62 lead and a missed lay up could have given Andalusia a four-point edge.

With 54 seconds left on the clock, Hillcrest’s Deanare Lyons made a jumper to tie the game at 64.

The Bulldogs forced the Jaguars to foul Andalusia’s Derrick King. He made one free throw out of two.

“We’re not supposed to be in that situation,” Robertson said. “Then, we get fouled and can’t convert. This is the same thing I’ve been talking about all year. The opponent is not our problem — our problem is execution of a plan and understanding of the plan.”

King then stole the ball and drew another foul from Hillcrest’s Chris Joyner. This time, King made both free throws and that would seal the Bulldogs’ second area win.

Andalusia’s O’Brien Curry led with 24 points, Justin Dooley had 14 and Quayshaun Denson had 11.

Hillcrest’s Deanare Lyons and Chris Joyner had 20 points apiece.

The Bulldogs will hit the road this Saturday night to play Calera.
