Opp boys, girls look to pick up area win

Tonight, the Opp boys and girls basketball teams will travel to play Ashford in area competition.

Both teams are coming off losses Tuesday night to Brewbaker Tech, another area opponent.

The boys team is currently 4-8, 1-2 in Class 4A, Area 2, while the girls have an 11-6, 0-3 record.

“We’re going to go in and control the tempo of the game and try to slow it down and not let them push the ball up and down the court,” Opp boys coach Ronnie Sansom said. “If we try and slow things down I think we have a good chance to win the game.”

Sansom said Ashford is a very “athletic” team that has lost to good opponents.

“They’ve lost some games this year, but they’ve lost to some good teams like Dothan, Houston County, and Rehobeth who just beat Eufaula,” he said.

In addition, Ashford’s area record right now is 2-1. They beat St. James and Bullock County, but lost to Brewbaker Tech.

“They have a new coach, but in the past they have been real strong in the guard position,” Sansom said about Ashford’s style of play. “They should be penetrating and getting the ball up and down the floor.”

Opp girls coach Allison Gregory said the team has put the loss to Brewbaker Tech on Tuesday night behind them and are looking forward to tonight’s match up.

“We’re looking forward to it,” she said. “We’re always excited about it when it comes to area time.”

Tip off tonight for the B-team is at 4:30.
