A ‘versatile’ foe

The Andalusia Bulldogs will be facing what boys coach Richard Robertson said is a “versatile” Clarke County basketball team tonight at home.

“They have a lot of people to make it hard to prepare for,” Robertson said at practice Thursday. “You can’t zoom in on one or two players, you have to prepare for the whole outfit. We’ve got to be on our guard because they’ll live off of our mistakes.”

On Tuesday night, the Bulldogs (16-2, 3-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) defeated Thomasville, 43-34.

Robertson said Clarke County likes to shoot from the perimeter.

“Their plan is to shoot and if they don’t make it, they’ll pick it up and shoot it until they make it,” he said. “They like to get up and down the floor and shoot the ball.”

Asked if “execution” is a key for tonight’s game, Robertson said one other aspect of the game as well.

“Ball security — you’ve got to take care of the ball and we’ve got to not get in foul trouble,” he said.

After Tuesday night’s game, Robertson said in the post-game interview that the team would have to go back to the basics.

He said they focused on the fundamentals on Wednesday.

“They are all coming and trying to do what they’re supposed to do, but when they come out on the floor, they get away from what we want to do and that puts us in a hole,” Robertson said. “We’ve got the same people, we’re just not getting the job done for four quarters. We’ve got to play four quarters. We’re playing in spurts.”

For girls coach Bennie Shellhouse, in order to get the fourth area victory, his team will have to play good defense.

“We didn’t play really good on the defensive side the last time we played them,” he said. “If we can play well on defense, then that will secure our chances to get a victory from them.

“They have a good squad,” he said. “They’re equivalent to Thomasville. The guards handle the pressure pretty well.”

The Lady Bulldogs are 14-4 overall and 3-0 in area play.

Tip-off for tonight’s games starts at 4:30 with the B-team.
