Granddaughters of locals compete, too

Kirkland Back, granddaughter of Jimmy and Jeanice (Paul) Kirkland of Andalusia, and Savannah Reach, granddaughter of Dale and Jane Gunn of Andalusia, also were participants in the 2010 Alabama’s Junior Miss.

Back is Etowah County’s Junior Miss and a resident of Gadsden. The Gadsden City High School student was a finalist in the scholastics preliminary.

She was a delegate for Alabama Girls State where she was a candidate for governor; was the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership representative; and is SGA vice president.

She is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta and Spanish Honor Society. She also represents her school as a Titan Ambassador and is co-captain of the GCHS danceline.

She plans to pursue a career as a pediatric neurosurgeon and her college preferences are the University of Alabama or Harvard University.

Reach is Tuscaloosa County’s Junior Miss. The American Christian Academy senior was a finalist in the essay and self expression preliminaries.

She is a member of the National Honor Society who has studied dance with the Royal Ballet Summer Intensive in London, the Soul Escape Professional Dance Company in Dallas, the American Ballet Theatre Summer Intensive in New York and the New York Radio City Rockette Summer Intensive.

She plans to pursue a career in genetics or as a professional dancer.
