After trailing 10-0 within the first two minutes of Tuesday night’s contest at No. 2 Brantley, Andalusia coach Richard Robertson called his team’s first time out of the game.

For No. 7 Andalusia, that time out couldn’t have come at a better time.

Andalusia ended Brantley’s 10-game win-streak Tuesday to hang on late in the fourth quarter to win, 63-60.

“We played better tonight than we have in the last two, but we still made too many critical mistakes,” Andalusia coach Richard Robertson said. “We made some bad decisions at times, but we’re going to go back, and we’ll work on the last two days and see if we can get a little bit better.

“We’ve got to get people to understand their roles and what their plan is,” he said. “We might have to play the same ones over and over. If that’s what it’s going to take, then we’re going to have to do it.”

Brantley shot out to a quick 56-54 lead in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Andalusia held the ball for approximately two minutes on its next possession to get Brantley where they wanted them.

With 3:03 left in the contest, Andalusia’s Jacard Townsend put up a jumper to tie the game at 56-all.

On Andalusia’s next possession, holding the ball seemed to work out for the visiting Bulldogs.

Townsend was fouled again on a lay up attempt with 2:13 left on the clock and was sent to the line for a 1-on-1.

He made his first and second freebie, to give his team a two-point advantage.

Andalusia took a time out to regroup.

Brantley then tied the game back up at 58 points apiece on free throws by Tory Upshaw.

Brantley’s Devante Porter then stole the ball and went up for a lay up, but was unsuccessful as the ball rimmed out and Andalusia’s O’Brien Curry caught the rebound.

Curry was fouled on the rebounding effort and made one at the free throw line.

With less than 40 seconds left in the game, Andalusia’s Derrick King connected with Justin Dooley, who put up a lay up to give his team a 61-58 lead.

Brantley took a time out to set up a three-point play, missed on an attempt by Upshaw.

Robertson said he had been working on Brantley’s three-point play since the weekend.

“They have four pretty good shooters,” he said. “We said Saturday that we’re going to take the hot hand an play those, too. We had different combinations to what we’re going to do. At the end of the ball game, everybody was covered.”

Quayshaun Denson was fouled and stepped up to the free throw line making his team’s last two points in the game.

And, in the end, Robertson said, “defense was the key.”

Andalusia started to chip away at Brantley’s lead in the first quarter trailing only by one point at 16-15 going into the second quarter.

By halftime, Andalusia had kept it close in the second quarter, matching its first quarter point total.

At the break, Andalusia made the necessary adjustments needed to stop Brantley’s perimeter game.

In the third quarter, Andalusia stepped up its defensive pressure to hold Brantley to 14 points compared to its own 20.

O’Brien Curry led Andalusia with 20 points. Quayshaun Denson added 18 and Jamal Curry and Jacard Townsend chipped in eight points apiece.

Devante Porter and Wesley Person led Brantley with 13 points apiece.

Andalusia will be on the road tonight in Dothan to face Northview High School. Tip off is immediately after the girls game.

Andalusia coach Bennie Shellhouse said the win was a good defensive effort from his team.

“We got up and played really well,” Shellhouse said. “We rebounded well and that was a big key.”

Andalusia’s Alexis Horton led with 16 points, Shi’Amber Townsend had 12 and Alectricia Barnes chipped in nine.

Eisha Person led Brantley with 13 and Ahmani Upshaw added 11.

Tonight, Andalusia travels to play Northview High School in Dothan.
