Straughn coach Todd Reynolds said Wednesday he did everything he could to get a win over Pleasant Home Tuesday night.

The Tigers played host to Pleasant Home and won, 36-28.

Pleasant Home took a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, but in the second Straughn’s C.J. Christopher made one of his five three-pointers to tie up the game.

“It was going to be a possession game, and I was going to keep the ball — of course Pleasant Home was going to keep it, too,” Reynolds said. “We basically were up by two points with 1.7 seconds left in the half and Chris Huggins hits a half-court shot to move it back to up five points.”

At the break, Straughn (8-11) had a 25-20 lead.

Reynolds said he knew what kind of team Pleasant Home was Tuesday night and wanted to pull out all the stops.

“I wasn’t going to take any chances because they are such a savvy group being Pleasant Home,” he said. “They’re going to make you pay for your mistakes. I was going to make sure they were very limited in their shot possibilities.”

At the free throw line, Straughn was 10-of-15 and Christopher was 5-of-6 from the perimeter.

Christopher led Straughn with 18 points and Caleb Cochran added six with eight rebounds.

The win Tuesday night gives Straughn a three-game winning streak leading into tonight’s county rival game at Red Level.

Reynolds said he wants the team to finish well.

“Things are starting to come together,” he said. “Of course, it’s not how you start that matters — it’s how you finish. This is when you want to start to put things together.

“We already accomplished a couple things we didn’t do last year,” he said. “We won two area games and we beat Pleasant Home when we did not last year. We have a tough game (tonight) going to Red Level.”

On Friday night, Straughn will be holding its senior recognition night. The Tigers will be hosting Florala.

Then on Mon., Feb. 1, Straughn will close out its regular season at Kinston.

“I’m pleased with the players growth,” Reynolds said about the seniors on the team. “I’ve seen growth and maturity. The maturation process is kicking in. These seven seniors are starting to see the writing on the wall and that the end is coming. They want to leave a better mark than they had started out leaving. We’re getting some quality play in all aspects now.”

In B-team action, Straughn won 40-18.

The Straughn Lady Tigers defeated Pleasant Home Tuesday night, 50-21.

Kimberly Teel led Straughn with 16 points and Katy Messick added 13.

The Lady Tigers improve to 17-4 on the season.

On Friday night, Straughn’s seniors will be recognized on its senior night.
