A Florala non-profit organization has agreed to be the “apex” of the city’s quest in electronic bingo, Mayor Robert Williamson said Friday.

That announcement, as well as that of a proposed plan from the gaming industry to bring electronic bingo to Florala, will be announced Monday at a 10 a.m. press conference at city hall.

Williamson confirmed Friday the city has “been able to partner the gaming industry with a non-profit” whom he said “has agreed to become the apex of this pursuit of economic development.” He called Monday’s announcement a “major step” in the city’s quest for economic development.

He declined to comment on who the parties involved were, but said, “Obviously we’re a long way off (in the process) but this (partnership) is a step in the right direction.”

In January, the city council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance regulating electronic bingo inside the city limits.

It set a 500-machine minimum for each facility and set licensing and permitting fees that would generate at least $697,000 in annual revenue for the city for the first two years, and a minimum of $1.2 million each year after that.
