Covington County residents can break out the heavy winter wardrobe and blankets as snow is expected to come in around midnight.

“At this time, what they are saying in our area starting about midnight to six Friday (morning) there is 1 to 3 inches of snow possible,” said County EMA Director Susan Carpenter.

Carpenter said the county’s neighbor to the north, Crenshaw County, could experience 3 to 5 inches.

However, the path could change she said.

Forecasters should have more up-to-date information today.

At this point, Carpenter said there is no special plan in place.

“We are just going to have to play it by ear and see what we collect,” Carpenter said. “We will be working with our road department.”

Carpenter said there is a possibility of issues with power lines and trees breaking due to ice accumulation.

Today’s high is expected to be near 49 degrees, but with wind chill values between 20 and 30 earlier in the day, and the mercury is expected to drop to around 30 tonight.

Friday the high will be near 39 with snow.

The National Weather service is calling for an 80 percent chance of precipitation.

Students in the Andalusia City School System will be out of school on Friday.

“Students already have the day off,” said Superintendent Beverly McAnulty.

“The teacher work day will start at the same time unless there is a severe situation.”

Covington County Schools officials are continuing to monitor the weather, Superintendent Terry Holley said.

“Right now we are planning to have school,” he said. “Were are going to wait and see.”

Opp City Schools are following the same plan.

“We will continue to monitor the situation, but as of right now we will have a regular school day Thursday and Friday,” said Superintendent Michael Smithart. “If there is a significant development that would necessitate a change in plans, we will notify our parents through local radio and television as well as our phone notification system.”
