Those wanting to get “in it” as a participant of a Covington County Relay for Life team have until April to decide to be a part of this year’s “In it to win it” game show-themed event.

Susan Byrd, Relay’s publicist, said teams are in full swing in preparation for this year’s Relay for Life event, which is set for May 7 at the Covington County Fairgrounds. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Closing ceremonies are set for 2 a.m.

Byrd said there are 30 official teams have registered, and to date, $25,689 has been raised. This year’s event goal is $117,000.

“So you can see how important it is for us to come together and work to raise this money for a worthwhile cause,” she said. “This year our theme is going to be based on game shows. Each team will choose a game show to decorate their campsite after.”

Byrd said event goers will have the option to participate in theme-show related games throughout the night, which follow the same format as last year’s.

“We’ll begin with a guest speaker and the survivor lap,” Byrd said.

“The only thing different right now is that we’ve had a lot of requests to move the survivor tent inside the Kiwanis building, which we will do.”

Byrd said survivors will be honored with a meal and game of ol’ fashioned card bingo and survivors should register by contacting Kim Carter at 427-3515.

Highlights of the event will include a karaoke contest, with the contestants divided into age groups. Byrd said the divisions for the age groups are “still in the works” and will be announced at a later day.

For more information on how to assemble a team, attend the next Relay for Life meeting on Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. for new teams at the County Board of Education. Committee members should report at 5:30, she said.

Contact Ressie Gray, event chairperson, at 334-427-3832 to register a team.
