Just to have a winning season is at the top of to-do the list for the Red Level Lady Tigers’ softball team this season.

“We want to go a little further than last year and do a little bit better in our area,” Red Level coach Heather Walden said. “This is the last year we’re in the same area with Excel, Mobile Christian and Flomaton. Maybe we’ll be able to play with them a little more.”

With that in mind, Walden said the girls want to beat Mobile Christian this year.

“We want to win the area championship,” she said. “That’s what they want. They want to win and go to state. Their biggest thing is to win and beat Mobile Christian. That’s their goal.”

Red Level lost three starters on the varsity team due to graduation last year. This season, the Lady Tigers have freshman Maggie Lambert on the mound at pitcher; junior Morgan Carpenter at third base; eighth grader Maklyn Batchler at shortstop; senior Ashley Wright at second base; Lania Paulk and Whitney Wright at first base; Brittany Scott at left field; Courtney Douglas at center field; Hailey Bennett at right field; and Jessica Kilpatrick at catcher.

“We have a lot of depth this year,” Walden said. “I’ve got somebody that can a role if needed.”

As far as pitching is concerned, Walden said she has a good amount of depth in that position as well.

“We’ve got a little more in the pitching area than just one,” she said. “Maggie has learned a lot of pitches last summer.”

This is Walden’s second season as the head coach of Red Level’s softball program, and she said she will stick to her same philosophy this year.

“I just want them to get out there and I’m preaching the attitude of good sportsmanship,” she said. “Being with these girls in volleyball and softball it kind of helps. I already know them and they know me, so it works out pretty well. They know what I expect of them.”

Red Level will play its first game of the season against Andalusia this Tues., Feb. 16 after the junior varsity game, which starts at 4 p.m.
