Andalusia defeated UMS-Wright 55-45 in the Class 4A South Sub-Regional tournament in Mobile on Saturday night to earn another trip to the South Regional tournament this week.

Andalusia (24-5) clearly learned from its mistakes from the free throw line, shooting 18-of-29, compared to last Monday night’s 0-of-16 against Thomasville.

“We made some mistakes, but we forced them into some,” Andalusia coach Richard Robertson said. “I’d give us about an 85.”

Andalusia trailed 9-8 after the first quarter, but quickly outscored UMS-Wright in the second 11-8 to lead 19-17 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Andalusia only allowed UMS-Wright to score one point compared to its 10 to take a 29-18 leading into the fourth quarter.

“We played them hard, and we had more cohesiveness, and that’s the key right there,” Robertson said.

UMS-Wright put up an impressive fourth quarter managing to outscore Andalusia, 27-26.

Derrick King led Andalusia with 13 points and was 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Quayshaun Denson had 10 points and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Jacard Townsend had 11 and Justin Dooley had nine.

Andrew Zieman led UMS-Wright with 18 points and Parker Shearer added 10.

“Right now, it’s the winner advances and the loser goes home,” Robertson said. “If we can progress from it, we might have gotten a better deal,” he said. “At this point, anyone (of the Class 4A teams left) of us can lose it or win it. You’ve got to win it on the court.”

Andalusia will continue its playoff run at the Class 4A South Regional tournament at USA’s Mitchell Center on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals against Dallas County.
