Dera Thompson Powell Smith, 95, born Feb. 26, 1914, and a longtime resident of Moore Road in Andalusia, passed away Fri., Feb. 12, 2010, in a local nursing home. Funeral services were held Mon., Feb. 15, at Keahey Funeral Home with David Paher and Doug Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Cedar Grove Church of Christ Cemetery with Keahey Funeral Home directing.
Survivors include her daughters, Christine Powell Stokes and Patricia Powell Buckelew Hudson, both of Andalusia; grandchildren, Sheila Stokes (Mac) Bracewell of Andalusia, Charles (Susan) Stokes of Andalusia, Jeff (Tammy) Buckelew of Opp, Bill (Gena) Buckelew of Red Level and John (Stacey) Hudson of Florala; great-grandchildren, Melanie (Tim) Day of Andalusia, Kenneth Mac Bracewell Jr. of Andalusia, Mark Stokes, Kevin Stokes, Nicky Buckelew, Amanda Buckelew (Jonathan) Ellison, Ty (Sheena) Buckelew, Jacob Williams and Jerran Williams; and great-great-grandchildren, Katherine Day, Jackson Day and Mercedez Stone.
Pallbearers were Mark Stokes, Ty Buckelew, Jimmy Bass, Kyle Thomasson, Curtis Thomasson and Mac Bracewell.
She was preceded in death by her husband of many years, Oscar B. Powell, in 1965, and later by husband, James H. Smith, in 1978. Until her death, Mrs. Stokes was the oldest living member of Cedar Church of Christ and represented a family of five generations in Covington County.
