Some energy efficiency changes are on the way for one school in the Opp City Schools System.

The Board of Education Tuesday passed a resolution to accept $375,000 in Qualified School Construction Bonds to fund upgrades to the HVAC system at Opp Middle School as well as some other projects to increase energy efficiency.

Smithart said as soon as the system submits the final paperwork it will receive a check.

“These projects actually provide a monetary benefit because the energy savings are greater than the cost of the payment,” said Super-intendent Michael Smithart.

“These funds will also allow us some flexibility with some other local bond funds to upgrade the restroom facilities at Channel-Lee Stadium.”

In other business, students will have to make up the day of school missed with Friday’s snow day.

Smithart said in order to accommodate the make-up day, the system will change the April 16 holiday to a teacher work day and use May 28 as the student make-up and final day of school.

The board also approved the 2010-2011 calendar, which includes 180 days for students and 187 days for teachers.

School will begin on Fri., Aug. 6.

The student calendar has no major changes, with a week for fall, Thanksgiving and spring breaks and the longer period for Christmas break.

Teachers are scheduled to have seven workdays, but Smithart said the number of workdays is actually in limbo because the state legislature is considering a bill that would eliminate some teacher development days.
