Councilman Kennith Mount told fellow members of the Andalusia City Council that his district will do the best job in a community clean-up effort planned for March.

The city will participate with People Against a Littered State (PALS) in clean-up efforts set for March 22-27 and for Oct. 24-30, he said. The October event is timed to precede Homecoming 2010, the City of Andalusia’s celebration of Alabama’s Year of Small Towns and Downtowns. The local celebration will be centered around Veteran’s Day.

Mount challenged each council member to recruit people in their districts to pick up trash and debris.

“We really need to get together and clean up the city,” Mount said.

When Jason Jewell, who represents District 4 and is the youngest member of the council, responded that he believed his district would win, Mount replied, “You’re a little bit young. You may need a trash-picking-up course.”

The bantering was all in good fun, and council members hope to structure the clean-up as a contest among districts.

Received a copy of Tom Sawyer and were invited to participate in the Andalusia Public Library’s Big Read, which begins next week.

Agreed to purchase trade in the police department’s current service weapons, which are third generation Glocks, and replace them with fourth-generation Glocks. The weapons will cost $3,800.
