With recent rainfall and snow, Opp officials say the condition of the city’s street are horrible.

“Our streets are in terrible shape,” said Mayor H.D. Edgar. “Places are giving way that have never given way before.”

But, thanks to money from FEMA, at least one problem area will be fixed in the coming days.

The council awarded Pensacola’s Roads, Inc. the low bid to fix the Dorsey Street culvert.

Roads, Inc. submitted a bid for $99,908, while the closest bid to it was an $111,880 from McDonald Construction in Union Springs.

In order to fix the culvert a box culvert will be installed.

“This will be a good fix for this road,” Edgar said.

City Planner Don Childre said Roads, Inc. has 30 days to begin the work on the culvert.

The mayor and council asked the residents of Opp to remain patient, while the city works to fix the damaged streets.

“We are waiting on it to dry out,” Edgar said. “We will fix the most serious roads first. We’ll get it done as quickly as we can.”

The council also approved a resolution to seek bids to construct an industrial access road into the Opp Industrial Park, which will include curb gutters and drainage facilities.

In addition, a turning lane and acceleration and deceleration lane will be constructed at the entrance to the park to benefit Custom Collars, Unitech and Shanklin Industries.

“We will be receiving state money,” Edgar said.

The Alabama Department of Transportation will fund the project.

Childre said the city has 21 days to advertise for bids and then the company who wins the project will have 30 days to begin the project.

In other business, the council passed on ordinance that abolishes the appointment of the city attorney and establishes a contract for legal services.

“Instead of appointing a city attorney, we will contract,” Edgar said. “This is strictly the way it should be.”

Edgar said it will save the city money.

“We have to change this, or we have to make the city attorney an employee,” Edgar said.
