This morning, the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs will face Brewbaker Tech in the girls AHSAA Class 4A South Regional tournament at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Center in Mobile.

“They’re solid all the way around,” Andalusia girls coach Bennie Shellhouse said.

As recently as last Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs (24-5) knocked Jackson out of the race, winning 61-48.

Today starts a “new” season for the girls’ team, whose seniors would like to get back to Birmingham, Shellhouse said.

“They remember what it was like to be 12-14 and 14-14,” he said about the seniors’ previous seasons. “So, they would like to go back there again.”

Shellhouse said his team is capable of doing that if they play their “best.”

“If we play as good as we have played against some other teams, then we should do OK,” he said. “They are a combination of watching Dothan and Thomasville.”

The Lady Bulldogs have good guard players and post players in Alexis Horton, Erica King and Alectricia Barnes, to name a few.

Today’s game starts at 9 a.m., which means an early start for the team, which was expected to leave Andalusia at 5 a.m.

“We’re hoping to get everybody up and be moving,” he said.

Shellhouse said his team finding their “pace” is key in today’s game.

“Sometimes you have regional games like this where a team will come out and exert so much energy at the very beginning they don’t have anything left to finish it off.”
