MOBILE — Brewbaker Tech ended the Andalusia girls’ basketball season Thursday morning in the Class 4A South Regional tournament at the University of South Alabama’s Mitchell Center.

Jasmine Holcey scored 18 points to help lead her team to the 66-55 win over the Lady Bulldogs.

“I’m very proud of the girls and how they responded,” Brewbaker Tech coach Kelvin Stokes said.

This is the first time in school history that the Lady Rams have made an appearance at the regional tournament.

Brewbaker Tech started off with a 6-0 run early in the first quarter, which is what Stokes said he wanted to see his team accomplish Thursday.

“Every game we approach, we want to start fast,” he said. “The first and third quarters as everybody knows are the two quarters you get your tempo and momentum going. It’s not always how you start — it’s how you finish.”

Leading 32-31 at halftime, the Lady Rams took advantage of their inside game and made big buckets when it mattered, outscoring Andalusia 18-14 in the third quarter.

“One thing about our post is that we’ve got very good post play,” Stokes said. “Andalusia likes to go to (Amber Anderson) and one thing is that we have a 6-foot-1 and a 6-foot-2, so they are very big girls, but at the same time they are very athletic.”

Throughout the second half, Andalusia would cut it close to get within Brewbaker Tech’s single-digit lead, but couldn’t convert.

“We couldn’t get over the hump,” Andalusia coach Bennie Shellhouse said. “We got it to one and then missed three lay-ups in a row. They were shots normally uncontested that would normally be made. Defensively, we didn’t play like we normally have. The two big girls in the blocks killed us putting up rebounds and put backs.”

In the final quarter of the contest, Brewbaker Tech (20-7) simply out-played Andalusia on the 94-foot court at the Mitchell Center to get the win.

“Our conditioning program took head today,” Stokes said. “We lasted on this 94-foot floor. We played man-to-man pretty much the whole game and we basically, I don’t want to say we wore them down, but you could tell in the fourth quarter Andalusia was a little tired. That’s what we honed in on was our conditioning program.”

Alexis Horton led Andalusia with 21 points. Amber Anderson added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Erica King had 10 points and Shi’Amber Townsend had 10.

“It is kind of a disappointment for us after being in the final four last year,” Shellhouse said. “We were hoping to get back to the state tournament. Brewbaker Tech was a lot bigger than us. They beat us in every aspect of the game just about.”

Andalusia finished with a 24-6 record.
