Terry Holley was named superintendent of Covington County Schools Tuesday.

The former principal of Florala High School had been serving as superintendent in an interim capacity since Sharon Dye’s retirement in July 2009.

“I appreciate the support from both the board and staff and will continue to nurture the Covington County School System in all aspects, both financially and curriculum-wise,” Holley said.

Board president John Clark jokingly said, “We promised him if he did a good job we’d give him the job permanently. He has done an excellent job.”

Other board members credited Holley with implementing measures to both save money and create revenue for the system.

Board member Linda Powell said others have also jokingly commented on Holley’s keen financial sense,

“They say he’s the person we need at this time because of how tight he can squeeze a penny.”

Holley said he is just continuing the practices the board has put in place.

“You’re the reason this system is in the (financial) shape it is,” he said. “You are each to be commended for being good stewards of the money.”

In other business, the board:

Set May 28 as a bad weather make up day for students and personnel after the “snow event” on Feb. 12. Graduation will be still be held on May 27.

Adopted the 2010-2011 school calendar with build in bad weather make-up days.

Agreed to let bids for renovations projects at all the schools in accordance with the bond issue. Local merchants are urged to submit bids, board members agreed.

Awarded a bid in the amount of $138,350 to Ameritech Enterprises for a new roof at W.S. Harlan Elementary School.
