Florala looks for ‘good turnout’ over weekend

The Florala Wildcats baseball team is looking for a good turnout today and tomorrow at the Covington County baseball tournament in Red Level.

Last weekend, the Wildcats didn’t fair too well at Opp’s annual memorial tournament, losing to the Bobcats 17-3 and Andalusia, 10-1.

“We definitely want to play better than we did last weekend,” Florala coach Stan Gooden said. “We didn’t do a good job of competing even though we played two quality opponents. It’s going to be tough.”

The Wildcats will open the tournament today against Straughn at 4 p.m. and then will play Red Level at 6.

On Saturday, Florala will finish its tournament play at 10 a.m. against Pleasant Home.

“There are three quality teams in the tournament,” Gooden said. “Straughn has a seasoned and experienced crew. Most of them have played together since the eighth and ninth grades.”

Gooden said he talked with the team on Wednesday about competing with opponents, and he said he believes his players can do that this weekend.

“I think they just want to play better,” he said. “They are better players than what they showed.

“One of our main goals is to learn from our mistakes and correct those mistakes,” he said. “If we can do that win or lose, we’re taking a step in the right direction.”

Right now, the Wildcats are sitting at 0-4 for the season and Gooden said practice has gone well this week.

“We’re going to give it our best effort.”
