It was a good night for Red Level, Pleasant Home and Straughn Friday on the first day of the 2010 Covington County baseball tournament in Red Level.

Straughn beat Florala 15-0 in five innings, Red Level defeated Florala 3-1, and Pleasant Home shut out the host team, 7-0.

Red Level’s Troy Nolen was 3-for-3 and had two singles, one double and two RBIs to help lead his team to the two-point win.

Nolen’s first RBI came in the first when he singled to score Michael Norman, who reached with a walk.

Nolen’s second came in the third inning scoring Jordan Walker, who stole second base and made it to third on a passed ball.

Red Level scored its last run in the fifth when Nolen made it home on an RBI single from Nick Nolen.

Florala scored its only run in the second inning.

Nick Nolen was 1-for-3 with one single, one RBI and two walks.

Red Level’s Nick Nolen earned the win on the mound Friday night. Nolen pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and striking out three.

Pleasant Home boys 7, Red Level boys 0

Pleasant Home’s Ethan King led his team on the mound pitching 7.0 innings, only allowing one hit, three walks and striking out six batters to give his team the defensive edge over Red Level.

“Ethan had a real good night,” Pleasant Home coach Bradley Stephens said. “He had a shutout going and we had a little mishap right there in the outfield.”

Stephens said his team played well on the “defensive” side of the ball.

“The boys fielded the ball well,” he said. “They really backed up Ethan. When we put up two to three runs after the first inning, we were able to start playing baseball.”

The Eagles (3-1) scored three runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to get the victory.

King was 4-for-4 with two singles, one double, one triple and two runs; Hunter Greathouse was 2-for-3 with one double, one single, one RBI and two runs; and Blake Herman was 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.

On the night as a whole, Red Level coach Tony Ingram said it was like a popular book by Charles Dickens.

“It was a tale of two games,” he said. “We couldn’t get anything going (in the second game). We didn’t hit the ball — that’s the story of the game. The kid (King) pitched a great game.

“You have to give Pleasant Home credit,” he said. “We just played awful. They hit the ball and we didn’t. They are much improved, but we’re going to get there though.”

Today, Florala will play Pleasant Home at 10 a.m., Pleasant Home will play Straughn at noon, and Red Level will finish the tournament against Straughn at 2.
