Last weekend’s Civitan Rodeo drew crowds ranging between 1,400 and 2,000 over a two-day period, raising more than $6,000 for the civic club.

Bert Champion, rodeo chairman, said 700 tickets were sold Friday and another 900 on Saturday.

“When you add it all up, and when we looked around and saw the stands filled, we were very well pleased,” Champion said.

“I think this is the best attendance we’ve had in years.”

He said events­ such as the trick rider, the stick horse race and the mechanical bull ride “drew the crowds in.”

“This time of the year, there are very few rodeos going on, so we had twice the number of contestants we normally get,” he said.

“I’d say there were close to 200 on Friday and 125 on Saturday.”

Monies raised at the rodeo go to fund Civitan projects for the year, including their main drive – constructing wheelchair ramps for handicapped people – as well as for donations to local charities such as Crossover Ministries and Opportunity House.
