Straughn’s baseball team didn’t allow a single run in the annual Covington County tournament at Red Level last Friday and Saturday.

The Tigers remain undefeated, as of Monday, after six different pitchers combined to shutout Florala, Pleasant Home and Red Level.

Straughn began its flawless tournament on Friday night, defeating Florala, 15-0. On Saturday, the Tigers beat Pleasant Home, 14-0, and Red Level, 11-0.

“I was real pleased with the way they threw strikes,” Straughn coach John Fussell said. “They stayed focused the whole tournament. We hit the ball pretty well. I guess the thing that probably is the biggest encouragement to me is that they are actually playing like a team.

“I haven’t seen one sign of selfishness,” he said. “To me, our success will depend on that right there.”

In the first game, pitchers Zack Stinson, Zack Lunsford and Jacob Ganous combined for five innings in the win.

Josh Dewrell was 2-for-3 with three RBIs; Luke Fussell was 2-for-5 with one RBI; Nick Allen was 3-for-3 with two RBIs; Drew Jones was 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Chase Parker was 2-for-2 with two RBIs; Zac Turvin was 1-for-4 with three RBIs; Chase Short was 2-for-3; and Zack Lunsford was 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Pleasant Home 0

Straughn’s Josh Dewrell earned the win on the mound for the Tigers pitching 5 innings, allowing one hit, zero walks and striking out eight.

“He was one strike away from a perfect game,” Fussell said.

Dewrell was 3-for-3; Luke Fussell was 2-for-2; Nick Allen was 3-for-4 with two RBIs; Drew Jones was 2-for-3 with three RBIs; Chase Parker was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; Zack Stinson was 1-for-3 with one RBI; Cody Hughes was 1-for-3 with two RBIs; Zac Turvin was 1-for-3 with one RBI; Andrew Burleson was 1-for-1 with one double; and Chase Short was 0-for-1 with one RBI.

Straughn 11, Red Level 0

Nick Allen earned the win for Straughn on the mound against Red Level, pitching 4 innings. Luke Fussell earned the save, pitching 1 innings. Both allowed zero hits.

“In the entire tournament, we had three base runners,” Fussell said.

In pitching at the county tournament, Straughn (5-0) pitched 15 innings, allowed zero earned runs, one hit and had 17 strikeouts.

In hitting, the Tigers had 46 hits, 40 runs, six strikeouts and nine walks.

Straughn will host Carroll-Ozark today in doubleheader action at 4:30 p.m.
