Wins keep coming for Straughn baseball

The wins just keep coming for the Straughn Tigers baseball team.

On Tuesday night, Straughn defeated Carroll-Ozark 12-7 to earn its eighth straight win since the start of the 2010 season.

The Tigers (8-0) were playing Carroll-Ozark in a doubleheader, but only played the first game. The second game was canceled due to inclement weather.

On Monday, Straughn beat Florala in a doubleheader 10-0 and 15-1.

This Friday, Straughn will host city rival Andalusia in a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m.

Three Straughn players hit home runs in their five-point win over Carroll-Ozark Tuesday night.

Josh Dewrell was 1-for-3 with one two-run home run; Drew Jones was 1-for-4 with one two-run home run; and Chase Short was 1-for-2 with one two-run home run.

“I was real pleased with our hitting,” Straughn coach John Fussell said.

Straughn’s Luke Fussell was 2-for-3 with one single and one double; Nick Allen was 2-for-3 with two singles and three RBIs; Zack Stinson was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; and Zack Turvin was 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs.

In pitching, the Tigers “didn’t do a good job,” Fussell said.

“We had too many walks,” he said. “Our defense was real good at times. We were just not real consistent. Overall, I was pleased with the way they played. They’re still playing as a team.”

Stinson earned the win on the mound for Straughn, pitching 4.2 innings allowing three hits, one unearned run, one walk and striking out five.

Dewrell pitched 2.1 innings, allowing six runs (three unearned), six hits, three walks and striking out two.

Luke Fussell was 2-for-3 with one RBI; Nick Allen was 2-for-3 with one double and two RBIs; Drew Jones was 1-for-2 with one single; Chase Parker was 1-for-2 with one single; Cody Hughes was 1-for-2 with one single; Zack Stinson was 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

Hughes earned the win, allowing one hit, no runs, no walks and striking out four.

Jacob Ganous pitched two innings, allowing no hits, no walks and striking out three.

Austin Creel got the save allowing no hits, no walks, no runs and striking out one.

Straughn 15, Florala 1

Josh Dewrell was 2-for-3 with one three-run home run; Luke Fussell was 2-for-4 with one grand slam; Nick Allen was 2-for-3 with one three-run home run; Chase Parker was 2-for-3 with one single and one double; Zack Stinson was 1-for-2 with one single and two RBIs; and Levi Lumpkin was 1-for-2 with one single.

Zack Lunsford got the win for the Tigers on the mound. He gave up three hits, one walk and one earned run. He also struck out four batters.

Chase Short got the save, striking out two, allowing no hits and two walks.
