Students of Andalusia Isshinryu Karate finished in the top 10 in a self-defense competition at the USYKA Winter Workout and Banquet, held on Feb. 6 at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.

There, they met with instructors and students from about 10 other karate schools from a four-state area.

The students worked out, competed in self-defense competition and attended a banquet to recognize top competitors from last year’s competition year.

Andalusia students started the day with a beach workout and attended mini-clinics by various instructors.

Then, the function moved inside to the convention center, where a showmanship and self-defense competition was held.

Andalusia competitors competed in self-defense competition based on belt level and age. Students placed as follows:

Alex Myrick — first place, green belt

John Allen Wise — second place, green belt

Rex Butler — second place, brown belt

Abram Guilford — third place, white/yellow belt

Colin Marcum — third place, green belt

Rexanne Butler — fourth place, brown belt

Allen Butler — fourth place, black belt

Curtis Butts — fourth place, black belt

Conner Dayton — fourth place black belt

Allen Butler — first place in showmanship competition.

At the awards banquet, Andalusia students finished with the following ranking for the 2009 competition year:

Hogan Nichols also received the “200 Club” awards for achieving more than 200 points in the 2009.
