Straughn dashed Andalusia’s hopes of getting another win Friday night as the third-ranked Tigers took both games of a double-header to remain undefeated this season.

The Bulldogs fell to the Tigers 7-1 in game one, and 2-1 in game two.

Straughn coach John Fussell said he was “proud” of the way his team came back in the end.

“I was just so proud of them because not one time did they ever give up,” he said. “They stayed in it the whole game and fought back and got the win.”

Straughn’s Nick Allen and Josh Dewrell hit one home run each in the first contest Friday night to help lead their team to the six-run victory.

Allen’s home run came with the count 0-and-2 and nobody on base. Dewrell’s came in the third inning.

Andalusia got on the board first in the game with an RBI single from Dilan Manring to score Robert Woodall.

Woodall reached after being hit by a pitch.

After the home run by Allen, the Tigers added another run in the second inning on a baulk from Andalusia’s C.P. Rogers.

Zack Stinson came home on the error.

Straughn’s Cody Hughes earned the win for the Tigers (10-0) scattering 16 hits with two walks, two strikeouts and allowing one run.

“I thought we hit well in the first game and made some plays,” Fussell said.

In the sixth inning, Allen hit an RBI single to score courtesy runner Levi Lumpkin, bringing Straughn’s lead to 4-1.

The Tigers scored their last two runs on a two-out rally in the sixth inning in the win.

Zack Lunsford and Jacob Ganous came around on a two-run single from Turvin.

Courtesy runner Lumpkin, in for Turvin, scored on an RBI double from Dewrell.

Dewrell was 3-for-4 with one home run, one single, one double and one RBI; Allen was 3-for-3 with one home run, two singles and one RBI; Chase Parker was 2-for-3 with two singles; Stinson was 1-for-3 with one single and one run; Lunsford was 2-for-3 with one run, one single and one double; Cody Hughes was 1-for-3 with one single, one run and one walk; Turvin was 1-for-3 with one single and two RBIs; and Lumpkin had two runs.

Straughn junior Josh Dewrell struck out four batters and gave up no hits in two innings as the Tigers beat Andalusia 2-1.

The Bulldogs (2-10) shot out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning and the game stayed that way until the fifth inning.

Despite the losses Friday night, Andalusia coach Jonathan Rasberry said he thought the team played well together.

“I thought we looked a lot better,” he said. “We played together as a team. I thought we came out here and competed well. In the first game, we missed a couple of spots with pitches. I thought our swings are getting better. We’re getting to the point where we need to get — we’ve got a long way to go — we’re getting to where we need to get.”

Straughn utilized its smart base-running and infield defense to top Andalusia in the win.

Between innings, Fussell said he told his players “just to relax and hit the ball.”

“I said, ‘I know it’s a big game,’ ” Fussell said. “It has no bearing on what our goals are for this season. I’m not trying to down play the rivalry or anything like that. I just want them to relax and play baseball because they can play.”

That they did.

Cody Hughes popped out for the Tigers, but that enabled Zack Lunsford to score from third base to tie the game up.

Lunsford reached on a double and stole third.

In the sixth inning, Straughn’s Drew Jones got on base with a single, and courtesy runner Levi Lumpkin scored on an RBI single from Chase Parker.

Straughn’s Dewrell was 1-for-3 with one single; Jones was 2-for-4 with two singles and one run; Chas Parker was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; Lunsford was 1-for-3 with one double and one run; and Turvin was 1-for-2 with one single.

Andalusia will hit the road today in a doubleheader against Wicksburg and Houston Academy.

Straughn will host Pleasant Home today in a doubleheader, starting at 11 a.m.
