SHS girls win 2, lose 1 at Wetumpka tournament

Sixth-ranked Straughn beat Stanhope Elmore 1-0 and St. James 4-1 last Friday in pool play before falling to Class 6A Opelika 3-2 at the Barry Mask Invitational softball tournament at the Wetumpka Sports Complex.

Stanhope Elmore girls 0

Straughn’s Kaitlynn Wiggins struck out seven batters, gave up three hits and walked five batters in five innings to help lead her team to the win.

In the top of the fourth inning, Katy Messick was hit by a pitch, and then Tori Bracewell bunted Messick to second base.

Straughn’s Tiffany Taylor then reached no an error to move Messick to third and Bracewell to second.

Kayla Teel then hit a fly ball to center to score Messick.

St. James girls 1

The Lady Tigers got going in the third inning on an RBI double from Kayla Messer to score Kelli Wilcox.

Messick then stepped to the plate and hit an RBI double to score Messer.

In the fourth inning, Teel reach on an error, Megan Johns singled and then Kari Biggs hit a two-run single to score Teel and Johns.

Messick earned the win on the mound. She struck out seven batters and gave up 10 hits.

Opelika girls 3,

Straughn girls 2

Stephanie Bracewell reached on an infield single in the first inning and later scored on a RBI from Messick.

In the third, Taylor reached on an error and later came around to score off of an RBI single from Wilcox.

Opelika scored the winning run in the top of the fifth.

Wiggins pitched five innings, gave up four hits, four walks and had four strikeouts.
