Every day, we hear of natural disasters “beyond human control.”

But we also hear about un-natural disasters that humans can control.

After reading the story Thursday on the front page of The Star-News I was saddened, and then I got mad! (Remembering Christie: Compressed air claimed life of 21-year-old who huffed) This story is just getting too common. When is enough enough?

Had this happened to my child or grandchild, I would have been distraught.

A human life is a gift, a wonderful miracle, as is all of life. We don’t appreciate it enough, nor do we scream out in protest enough when a life, like the one of this 21-year-old, is harmed or taken.

As you look in your child’s eyes, see yourself. Sit down with them and talk with them, not AT them. Educate yourselves on these killers – prescription drugs, illegal drugs, alcohol, and inhalants. Go to Web sites and find out more about how to recognize and prevent their use.
