MONTGOMERY. (AP) — Alabama recording star Percy Sledge is getting lots of recognition from the Alabama Legislature.

The House and Senate gave Sledge standing ovations Thursday after he lip synched his hit from the 1960s “When a Man Loves a Woman.”

Sledge is a native of Leighton and was one of the first singers to record in studios in the Muscle Shoals area. His other hits included “Warm and Tender Love” and “It Tears Me Up.”

Democratic Sen. Bobby Denton of Muscle Shoals said Sledge has been an ambassador for Alabama all over the world.

Sledge visited the Legislature before performing at the induction ceremony for the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. He’s been a member of the Alabama hall since 1993. Denton, one of Muscle Shoals’ earliest artists, is a new inductee.
