Some 145 people turned out to “Walk for a Cure” Saturday.

Sponsored by “Sole Sisters” Kim Brook, Melissa Whittle, Tonya Mount, Shan Burkhardt, Kim Hopkins and Debbie Marcum, the fundraiser was organized to help the group raise money to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk.

“The event was a great success,” Brook said. “We raised a little more than $4,000.”

That money raised will go toward the $2,300 that each of the six women must raise on a local level to participate in Komen 3-Day Walk.

Locally, participants began in the Beef O’Brady’s parking lot and walked 5 kilometers.

Later this year, the “Sole Sisters” will walk 60-miles in the three days.

Why are these women working so hard to help fight breast cancer?

Brook said that the disease in some form or fashion affects nearly everyone.

“We either know someone, or we have been through it ourselves. We need to find a cure,” she said. “One in eight women are diagnosed and one in 100 men are diagnosed.”

Brook said they would sponsor the local event again next year.
