Opp continued its winning ways Monday night on the road, defeating Samson 17-7 in five innings.

On the game itself, Opp coach Michael Cassady said the team hit the ball well, but lacked in one important area of the game.

“I was disappointed (Monday night) in our pitching,” he said. “We only gave up six hits, but we gave up seven runs on six hits.”

Cassady said the seven runs were scored as a result of walking batters and batters getting hit by pitches.

“We hadn’t been doing that on the mound,” he said.

Tyler Harrison pitched 2.1 innings, Jantzen Flowers pitched 1.1 and Hunter Jones pitched 1.1 innings.

Behind the plate, the Bobcats scattered 19 hits, two of which were three-run home runs by Gavin Free and Britt Wilson, respectively.

Free was 4-for-4 and Wilson was 2-for-3 on the night.

Opp’s Josh Thompson was 4-for-4 with three singles and one double; Dilan Ziglar was 3-for-4 with three singles; Trey Short was 3-for-3 with one double; Lance Robbins was 1-for-1; and Zack Sasser was 2-for-3.

“We’re just hitting the ball well right now,” Cassady said about his team’s success this season. “That’s the biggest thing.”

But, as with every baseball team, there are still some things that need to be ironed out.

For Opp, it’s to remain focused on the game and putting the ball in play.

“We’ve got to cut out on the walks and the mental mistakes and spread everything out a little bit,” Cassady said. “Up until (Monday night), we’ve been throwing strikes. Our pitchers have done a great job in doing that. If you have pitchers that throw strikes and put balls in play for put outs, then that’s fine.

“There is no doubt I have great kids,” he said. “They’re doing everything I am asking them to do. They’re having fun right now. They really are doing well right now.”

The Bobcats will travel to play Greenville on Thursday at 4 p.m., starting with the junior varsity team.

Next Monday, the Bobcats will play their last area series against Brewbaker Tech.

Opp must win one-out-of-two to be able to host in the playoffs.

“They’re a good baseball team,” Cassady said about Brewbaker Tech. “They’re a lot like us in pitching with a lot of depth in pitching.

“They did lose to St. James, who we swept,” he said. “Our kids are going to have to prepare and get ready for that game next week.”
