MONTGOMERY (AP) — A commission appointed by the Legislature has set a goal of reducing the state’s high school dropout rate by 25 percent in the next five years.

Currently, about 65 percent of high school students graduate.

The Alabama Select Commission on High School Graduation released a report Tuesday that included a number of recommendations. The commission completed the report after holding five hearings on the issue around the state.

The recommendations include tracking the progress of students from kindergarten to graduation to determine times when students are at risk of dropping out. The panel also recommended reviewing school disciplinary procedures to make sure they were improving student conduct and not encouraging students to drop out.
