The Florala Wildcats beat Kinston in area action Monday night, 5-1.

Winning pitcher Brock Goodwin pitched seven innings, allowed four hits, three walks, no earned runs and had 11 strikeouts.

With this win, the Wildcats improve to 9-15 overall, and 1-1 in Class 1A, Area 3.

Florala coach Stan Gooden said the team got behind in the third on errors, but they didn’t give up.

“We held it together and got out of that jam with the bases loaded and no outs,” he said. “They scored only one run in and it was unearned. Brock Goodwin pitched a great game. He had control of his pitches, and he did a great job of keeping Kinston off balance at the plate.”

Florala’s Zac Fleming was 1-for-3 with one double and one run; Erik Vega was 2-for-3 with one run; Goodwin was 1-for-2; Austin McNeil scored two runs; Hunter Oswald scored one run; and Gavin McCurley was 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Gooden said his team has a chance to make the playoffs if they have a good week next week against Kinston.

“If we can keep getting better, and take care of business next week at Kinston, then we will have reached a goal not many believed we could,” he said. “I am proud of the way our kids have improved. They expect to win. All of the credit goes to them and their willingness to work and being unselfish. They are a great group of young men.”
