Local photographer Robert Evers took a different approach when it came to the portraits he displayed in the rotating “Portraits of Us” photography exhibit.

Evers said he decided to use black and white photography instead of color.

“I used black and white photography to give it a different look,” he said.

The photography exhibit sponsored by the Lower Alabama Arts Coalition and displayed inside Andalusia’s Sugar Rush Bakery through April, features photography by local artists of local people.

Evers’ work is on display through this week.

“I think this is good for the exposure and to highlight everyday people,” he said. “Such as the UPS man who comes from Evergreen every day. He is featured in the show.”

Evers said he’s been in the photography business since 2003.

“I’ve always been artistic, but having a sister (local photographer Vicki Popwell) in the business is part of it. I also have a degree in film from the University of Alabama,” he said. “I’ve had a variety of careers. My favorite job was when I taught for the Navy. I taught sailors history and traveled all over the world.”

Evers said this exhibit is only his third or fourth.

“I’ve done some work for the city that is going to be featured in the Small Towns and Downtowns event ,” he said. “I also do a lot of work for the Andalusia Ballet. I take their publicity and performance photos.”

Other photographers participating in the exhibit include Dr. Angelo Agro, C.M. Ryan Doty and Zoe Birk.

Groups of 20 photographs are being rotated on a two-week basis.
