Florala kept it close against sixth-ranked Geneva County Tuesday night, but the Wildcats fell 8-7.

Despite the loss, Florala coach Stan Gooden said his team played “some of our best baseball.”

“We came out and gave Geneva County all they wanted,” Gooden said. “They had beaten us pretty good earlier in the season. Our guys were focused and ready to play. We had a couple of base running errors that cost us a couple of runs.

“Even though we lost, we played until the end against a top-10 team in the state,” he said. “We will learn from this and correct those mistakes. They played their hearts out.”

Gooden added that his team has improved a lot since the beginning of the season.

“We’re playing a lot better than what we’ve been playing,” he said.

“We’ve still got a chance to make the playoffs.”

Losing pitcher Gavin McCurley allowed five hits, two walks and struck out three batters in three innings of work.

Hunter Oswald had two walks and two runs; Zac Fleming had two runs; Brock Goodwin had two doubles, one run and two RBIs; McCurley had one hit and one run; Jordan Rowel had two hits and two RBIs; Jonathan Burleson had one hit and one run; and Austin McNeil had one double.

Florala (9-16, 1-2 in Class 1A, Area 3) will travel to play Red Level on Friday night in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.

The Wildcats will have their last home game of the season, along with senior night, Tues., April 6 against Pleasant Home.

Next Thursday, the Wildcats play in Kinston for a doubleheader for a chance to play in the playoffs.
