Straughn held its annual basketball banquet Thursday night at the high school cafeteria.

The boys and girls basketball teams, along with Straughn’s cheerleaders were recognized include the B-team, junior varsity and varsity squads, along with players from each grade.

In addition, special awards were given to athletes that excelled during their sports’ respective season.

Chearleaders

Straughn cheerleader sponsor Amy Godwin commended the cheerleaders for all of their hard work during the football and basketball seasons.

Godwin recognized cheerleaders in all classifications and each received a pink daisy.

Girls

The Straughn Lady Tigers completed their season 20-5 at the Class 3A, Area 3 tournament.

“It’s so hard to put in words what these girls and this team mean to me,” Straughn girls coach Scott Kinsaul said. “They have been great players to teach, coach, associate with and to be around. I love these girls. I consider myself the luckiest coach in the world.”

Kinsaul recognized and gave thanks to the team managers — Ethan Powell, film recorder; Jeremy Knox, score keeper and clock manager; Amy Dye, manager; and Katie Beck, statistician.

Five freshmen, two sophomores, four juniors and three seniors were then given certificates.

Kinsaul said in the last two seasons, the girls varsity team has compiled a 42-12 record and a 76-32 record in the last four seasons.

The captains on the team are Tiffany Freeney and Kayla Teel.

The most valuable player award went to Kayla Teel and Kimberly Teel.

Boys

The B-team finished its season with an 11-6 record and has a 42-16 record in the last three seasons.

Boys coach Todd Reynolds said it was good to see his players grow throughout the season.

“We had players step up and begin to know their roles,” he said.

He then recognized each player on the team, even those that were not able to attend the banquet.

The True Grit award went to Avery Driver; and the Sniper award (the player with the most three-pointers) went to Jasper Ballard.

The varsity boys team has recorded a 45-35 record in the last three seasons and improved to finishing as the No. 3 seed in area play this season.

In addition, the Tigers held their opponents to the lowest point total at 50 points per game.

Four senior players will graduate from Straughn.

Reynolds recognized each player from each grade and gave each senior a T-shirt and a watch.

Straughn’s seniors are Knox, Bryan Walker, Jacob Bybee and Caleb Cochran.

The Saint in the Paint award went to Cochran; the Sniper award went to Bybee; and the True Grit award went to Christopher Huggins.
